General Meeting Minutes
Emergency Meeting
September 27, 2011
Call to order & welcome & introductions: 7:03pm
Correspondence: none
Minutes approved unanimously.
Budget: no changes since the last meeting.
Membership: close to 45% but the total is not yet tallied. It is never too late to join. We accept membership all year long. We will also be reaching out to grandparents.
Pass the hat was very successful $4555, not including the money combined with membership. Our goal is $8000 for the year.
Breakfast Buddies: it is up and running. Starting 9/28 they will eat in the gym on a trial basis. We greatly appreciate having an indoor space for the kids. 5 volunteers so far – one for every day of the week.
Directory: LeAnn should have the data drop done by next week. Unfortunately, parents cannot put their email directly into Parent Assist, so collecting the full data for the directory is time consuming. Perhaps we can work with classroom teachers and use their email lists?
Garden Club: One time budget increase request of $500 as opposed to $200. Will need Chair to cross train this year. Rich is willing to keep organizing the garden club once Naomi “graduates”.
Make-It Take-It: Will be held December 3rd, times to be announced and coordinated with Holiday Shop. MANY volunteers will be needed to help out, more info about this coming out in early November.
Spelling Bee: Mark & Lisa are ready to sponsor it, but need someone to organize it. This would involve sending out spelling lists to classes, organizing the event, judges, etc. Probably will be the first week of January. 1st-6th grades can participate in the Bee, but only 5th & 6th go on to State.
Chair / Co-Chair Positions Update: List of open chair positions is listed on the web page. Laura will take on Movie Night and Rich will take Chess Club.
We still need: Library Chair next year; Emergency Preparedness, which school heads up, and is run by Janice Finch with PTA support; Classic Books, a book club, with training in the Fall. Volunteers meet with small groups of kids at recess to discuss the books. Chair would coordinate and recruit volunteers; Spirit Day – Dena will Co-chair this if needed; Holiday Shop is looking for a Chair.
Upcoming Events:
Bingo - January
Skate Party – November & February
Clay Docent - October
Chess Club -
Movie Night – November
Make-It Take-it & Holiday Shop- December
World Language programs & many enrichment programs are happening now, so please check out the Community Programs page on the PTA website.
Principal Time with Mr. Santos: Welcome and greetings. Thanks for all of the support from PTA for all of the programs and things we did. 600 plus kids this year. 20 classroom teachers and more support staff. 57 staff total – busy start to the year. New Literacy adoption this year which is a 2 year training. School philosophy is to go deep, not wide. We do not want to teach the surface, but really teach.
Questions / Comments / Feedback
Question from Laura to Bethel regarding school growth: Bethel said that according to District we are not considered at full capacity, but we are on the District’s radar for growth. No decisions are being taken as of yet but future possibilities could perhaps include portables, rebuilding or redefining boundaries. Nothing is happening at the moment. Bethel assured PTA that our PTA portable will not be turned into classrooms.
Meeting adjourned at 8:07pm.
