PTA Meeting Information

2-9-10
Moorlands PTA general meeting

Meeting called to order at 7:04.

Correspondence – thank yous from teachers for auction items – literacy items, playground balls and PE mats and music.

Principal’s time – Bethel Santos – WASL replacement testing – MSP – measurement of student progress – May 12-28 (paper/pencil not computer based yet) – 1 day each for reading, math and science plus 2 days for reading – multiple choice, completion and short answer questions – Bethel provided some examples – completion questions are simplified – do not need to show their work. No examples of short answer available so do not know if they will need to show their work, but there are some multiple choice where they ask what is the appropriate way to solve a problem, or find the missing digit in a step to solving a math problem. Bethel also provided a vocab list for different grade levels (available at ospi website – office of superintendent of public instruction)

Committee updates

Skating – Lauren just had a baby on Friday, so Bob Graff is helping out, but he also needs help from 5:45-7.

Missoula children’s theater – March 1st auditions for 2 hours. They will choose 50-60 participants and those will pay $40 and have practice from 3:15-7:45 with sack lunch/dinner. 2 performances on Saturday of Robinson Crusoe.

Science fair – intermediate kids are required. Primary kids are voluntary and they can still participate – not too late. March 13, 11am-2pm.

Art workshop – mid-April, Nancy Biery coordinating.

Membership drive – only about 10 new memberships, so disappointing result, but perhaps people are worried about what’s in it for them. What does the school do vs. what does the PTA do? More advertising at events so that people know.

Auction – 3 potential chairpeople meeting with Laura this week.

Language – Japanese and Mandarin, 2nd week of March, cultural day late-mid March where free sample vouchers given out so students can try a class.

Legislation - Did get enough votes to count the vote, but won’t know results until Feb. 24 or so, unless it’s unanimous.

PTA business:

Mustang Messenger – not really timely any longer, most information is on the website; earlier in the year Kirsty Lee had suggested that we start a blog or something similar on the website and see more timely updates from parents, teachers and students potentially; executive board has concluded that this should be done, so hardcopy Messenger will no longer be produced and we will gradually phase in a blog; the Messenger editor will solicit articles and serve as editor of the material that goes on the blog. Could Tech Club be involved?

Nominating committee – need to replace VP of fundraising, treasurer, secretary, VP of permitting, co-president and add VP of Community Programs

Treasurer needs a couple volunteers to audit the books – does not take much time, but need people who aren’t on exec board to review the books.

Upcoming volunteer opps:

Children’s theater – ticket sales on Sat.
Science fair – cleanup on Saturday, March 13
Staff appreciation – Susan Watters, Ginny Larsen, and Ann-Marie Clarke have volunteered to cover the rest of the months, but they will need volunteers to help each month
Committee chairs for next year – will need some, but fortunately retaining some

Thank yous –

Wendy Reynolds – Advocacy – getting people to vote
Kate Schelin – Mustang Messenger
